In the Bible, we are presented with powerful images of God's authority and the strength of His angels. One such moment is found in the Old Testament, where an angel of the Lord single-handedly destroys an army of 185,000 men in one night (2 Kings 19:35). This dramatic display of divine power leaves us in awe of what God can do. The power of His angels is nothing short of overwhelming.

Yet, when we look to the New Testament, we see a different side of this power—one of restraint and ultimate sacrifice. Jesus, the Son of God, was fully aware of the countless angels at His command. In fact, when He was arrested, He told Peter, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53). That’s over 75,000 angels—more than enough to protect Him from the cruel forces that would soon drive Him to the cross.

Imagine the scene. Jesus, in the midst of being arrested and about to face brutal torture and crucifixion, could have called on the power of 75,000 angels. He had the authority to stop His suffering, to destroy His enemies, and to avoid the agony that lay ahead. Yet, in His infinite wisdom and love, He chose not to. If 1 angel conquered an army of 185,000 in a single night, what could 75,000 angels conquer?

Why? Because His mission was far greater than any personal comfort or desire for relief. Jesus knew that His death was the only way for humanity to be reconciled to God. Through His sacrifice, the sins of the world would be forgiven, and the path to eternal life would be opened for all who believe.

The fact that Jesus chose to endure such unimaginable suffering, despite having all power at His disposal, shows the depth of His love for us. It is a love so profound that He was willing to lay down His life, not out of weakness, but out of strength—strength of character, strength of resolve, and strength of love.

Jesus’ decision to remain silent and endure the cross demonstrates the greatest act of selflessness the world has ever known. It’s a reminder that sometimes true strength is found not in power or force, but in the willingness to sacrifice for others. The power Jesus held was immense, yet He chose to use it for the sake of our salvation. What greater love could there be?
